Smoke from wildfires in Western Canada has shifted thousands of kilometres into Ontario
Parts of Ontario have experienced both hazy and vibrant skies as smoke plumes from the wildfires in Western Canada move across the country.
While the smoke will mostly affect communities closest to the fires, strong, upper-level winds have transported the smoke thousands of kilometres west to east across the Northern Hemisphere.
There are currently more than 40 active fires burning in British Columbia and 80 wildfires burning in Alberta. These fires are already contributing to the intense smoke and poor air quality across Canada’s northern and western provinces and territories.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has not issued an air quality alert regarding smoke in Ontario, but warns smoke levels could fluctuate.
