Labour Day storms produce a confirmed tornado in Saskatchewan

Environment Canada confirms an EF-0 tornado touched down in Saskatchewan during Labour Day storms

The Labour Day long weekend ended with a bang across Saskatchewan, where severe thunderstorms produced at least one confirmed tornado and several funnel cloud sightings.

Enviroment Canada confirmed one of the funnel clouds did touch down Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. local time, in a field east of Hume, near Griffen. It rated the tornado as an EF-0 with estimated wind speeds of 105 to 137 km/h. There was no damage reported.

The agency also received photos of a funnel cloud near Lumsden, but did not confirm a touchdown since there were no reports of one or any damage as a result.

"ECCC is actively seeking additional photos and reports of damage. These can be sent to skstorm@canada.ca or posted to #skstorm on Twitter," Environment Canada said in its summary of the Monday storms.

As severe thunderstorms fired up across the province Monday, prompting tornado warnings, social media quickly lit up with photos and video of the funnel clouds including a large funnel spotted northwest of Regina.

At one point Monday evening, tornado warnings were issued across the rural municipalities of Tecumseh and Griffin, as well as Lumsden and Edenwald, including Balgonie, Piapot Reserve, Regina Beach and Craven.
