What should you do if your home floods?
After days of torrential rain in southern Ontario, communities throughout Toronto faced localized flooding on Tuesday.
And nobody was immune – not even October's Very Own. Rapper Drake, who lives in the city's affluent Bridle Path neighbourhood, posted a now-viral video of his luxurious home, nicknamed "the Embassy" submerged in murky brown water on social media.
People had a lot to say.
One X user asked, "Why are they not closing any doors to minimize the inflow?"
"Someone buy this man some rubber boots," a Reddit user said.
Okay, Drake – the internet has spoken. It looks like you need flood mitigation tips.
So here's what to do if your home floods:
Do not attempt to shut off electricity if water is present because water and live electrical wires can be lethal, the Government of Canada says. In the U.S., meanwhile, FEMA suggests immediately turning off electricity and gas to prevent accidents, but only if it is safe to do so.
Avoid contact with water. Floodwater can contain sewage or chemicals, the Canadian Red Cross advises. Use protective gear if you must touch it.
Document damage. Experts suggest taking photos and videos for insurance claims before you start cleaning up.
