400+ crashes as GTA sees record early November snow
One of November's heaviest snow events on record resulted in hundreds of crashes in southern Ontario.
Winter weather took a toll on travel in southern Ontario Monday and Tuesday, with more than 400 collisions reported during the heaviest early-November snowfall on record in the GTA.
Snowfall amounts in the double-digits were widespread across southern Ontario by the time the storm tapered off early Tuesday. The 13.6 cm that fell on Monday at Toronto's Pearson International will go into the record books as the highest snowfall for the city on or before November 11th and the sixth snowiest day on record for the entire month.
And Pearson was on the lower end of the totals around the GTA and western Lake Ontario, where lake-enhanced snowfall saw nearly 20 cm pile up from Oakville to Hamilton. Grimsby, on the shores of the lake, emerged as the snowfall champion, with 24 cm on the ground by early Tuesday.
Heavy snow targetting the QEW corridor contributed to the treacherous travel conditions Monday and early Tuesday. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP took to Twitter Tuesday morning to discuss commuter troubles around the GTA, urging drivers to take their time, and consider road conditions when heading out.
