Don't wait until spring: Why fall is the best time to plant perennials

You don't need to put the gardening on hold until spring when planting in the fall can have some unexpected advantages. We spoke to a gardening expert about why you should plant perennials in the fall

If you're looking to spring 2025 for your next chance to do some gardening, you may want to take note and put a pause on that.

If you wait until then, you may miss out. In fact, the fall could be the best time to plant perennials.

"We’ve got nice, warm soil [and] reliable rainfall. It gets them off and going, and [by] next spring, they are even bigger and better," said Kris Morettie, a horticulturalist with TERRA Greenhouses, in a recent interview with Rachel Schoutsen, morning host and journalist at The Weather Network.

To help with the selection process, some of the best perennials to plant for colour in the fall are the black-eyed Susan or a bright hibiscus. And, if you are looking for vegetation with a spring colour, go with the heuchera.

"Because we are going for colour from foliage, it's a wonderful thing to plant now and enjoy early in the season next year," said Morettie.

Perennial sage, or salvia, is also an excellent option as it's a double bloomer.
