Parts of Alberta are in for a soaking, with up to 50 mm of rainfall or more expected in some locales, accompanied by a thunderstorm risk on Tuesday

Some locales in Alberta are in for a soggy first half of the week.

Heavy rain is expected for parts of Alberta, thanks to a low-pressure system, with up to 50 mm or more locally possible, but parts of the region will also miss out on it.

The rain will also be accompanied by a widespread threat for thunderstorms on Tuesday, albeit non-severe in nature.

Renewed storm risk bubbles up on Tuesday with heavy rainfall

A developing, slow-moving low-pressure system lifts off the foothills and moves eastward throughout the afternoon and evening on Tuesday, and threatens to bring locally 50+ mm of rain across central Alberta.

With the cooler trough, precipitation will fall as snowfall above 2200 metres Tuesday night. It’ll be near 30°C during the day across southeastern Alberta, however, creating the dynamics needed to produce heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity.

With the heavy rain, ponding and pooling on roadways can be expected.

There is lower confidence on the exact rainfall totals as some of it will be associated with thunderstorm activity.

The rain will likely be at its heaviest Tuesday afternoon, west of Edmonton, before it sinks south toward Calgary on Wednesday.

Wednesday will feel more like autumn than summer

A quick shot of autumnal weather is expected in parts of southern Alberta Wednesday thanks to some cool northwesterly winds. Temperatures will fall by as much as 15°C on Wednesday, with widespread rain showers also on tap.

Temperatures could also be cold enough for some folks to wake up Wednesday morning to some falling snow at Banff's base.

It will be rather blustery, as well, with sustained winds touching 50 km/h around the Edmonton area, with gusts approaching 80 km/h.

Temperatures will quickly rebound after the system departs, however, with warmer-than-seasonal temperatures spreading across the Prairies late week. A quick shot of cooler weather during the weekend, especially in the eastern sections, but then temperatures will rebound.

Conditions will turn hot for Labour Day and back to school, especially in Alberta and into Saskatchewan.
