Problematic winds could whip up travel troubles on the eastern Prairies

Prepare for tough travel in spots on the Prairies this weekend as winds gust high enough to make you grip the steering wheel.

You may want to hold off on putting out any Halloween decor on Saturday if you live on the eastern Prairies as the wild winds would likely spoil anything displayed outside.

Prepare for strong winds as a strengthening storm traverses the Prairies, with gusts of 80-100 km/h continuing on Saturday in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

These winds will likely impact major travel routes and highway driving, and are notoriously known for swaying or even tipping transport trucks at this strength and speed.

The trans-Canada storm we’re tracking this weekend will strengthen over the Prairies through the weekend.

Prairies wind gusts Saturday afternoon

Wind gusts will reach 80-100 km/h across southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba by Saturday. Highways 1 and 16 could be impacted as winds strengthen through the day.

Meanwhile, areas across central Saskatchewan and Manitoba will see rainfall totals between 5-20 mm, making for a gloomier fall weekend in spots.

Prairies weekend rainfall

Temperatures will fall behind the system before much warmer weather returns for next week.

Aside from this system over the weekend, however, a relatively quiet pattern is expected for much next week, with no major fall storms in sight just yet.

Warmer-than-normal temperatures will dominate next week and continue through much of October with just brief interruptions, but keep in mind that "seasonal" is dropping by at least two degrees per week.
