We're a month into what will surely be a memorable year. And while winter has settled in across the nation, many homebound Canadians have been asking an age-old question:
Will spring be here soon?
Groundhog Day 2021 puts the answer to that question in the tiny hands of furry prognosticators across Canada and the U.S. as we turn to everyone's favourite forecasting rodents to find out if we're in for an early taste of spring, or if it will be better to hibernate through the next six weeks.
The holiday is a popular tradition celebrated in North America on February 2. According to folklore, if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will be scared and return to its burrow. That translates to a forecast of six more weeks of winter on the way. Under cloudy skies, the groundhog stays out to visit, suggesting we'll see an early spring.

Shubenacadie Sam: EARLY SPRING
Sam did NOT see her shadow this stormy morning in Nova Scotia, signalling an early spring.
Fred la marmotte: EARLY SPRING
We are two for two on an early spring! Fred did NOT see his shadow in Quebec.
Wiarton Willie: EARLY SPRING
Are you noticing a trend? Willie also did not see his shadow in Ontario. While today's events were virtual, it was a special day for Willie, with Wiarton marking the 65th anniversary of this yearly local tradition.

Punxsutawney Phil: SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER
It's going to be a long winter, according to our friend Phil in Pennsylvania. He saw his shadow, meaning six more weeks of winter.
Balzac Billy: SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER
If our friends in Alberta were hoping for an early spring, we've got bad news for you. Balzac Billy saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter.
