Thor the walrus continues his tour of the UK's North Sea coast
Thor has become quite the celebrity.
New Year's Eve festivities were put on hold in Scarborough, England, thanks to a large party crasher nicknamed Thor.
It's just one of the many stops the juvenile male has made in recent weeks as he embarks on his European tour.
The Arctic walrus was spotted harbourside on December 30 in Scarborough, a resort town on the North Sea coast. His visit prompted officials to cancel the end-of-year fireworks display.
But that didn't deter crowds - thousands showed up to try and get a glimpse of the unusual guest, causing the local mammal medic rescue to issue a warning to the public to stay away. Officials kept a close eye on Thor, who was said to be acting normally.
NEXT STOP: NORTHUMBERLAND
Two days later, he was spotted in Northumberland, also along the North Sea coast but a staggering 160 km away, resting on the docks of a yacht club.
Over the past few weeks, Thor has turned up in a few places in the North Sea and English Channel, including visits to the Netherlands and France, Natural History Museum reports.
Thor is about 2,000 km from his stomping grounds in the Arctic Ocean. Experts say walrus sightings in the UK are rare but are increasing due to melting ice.
ODE TO WALLY
In spring 2021, Wally the Walrus made headlines after turning up in Ireland, landing there after possibly falling asleep on a loose iceberg within his normal range.
Wally spent about three weeks checking out tourist attractions in Ireland and Britain, making himself quite comfortable on privately-owned boats.
